Step 1: Basic Design
Select Configuration
In this first step, chose the basic barrel head configuration you would like.
| Choose a product style | Tenth Barrel Head $229 |
|
Click here for gallery What's this? The "Tenth Barrel" is our most popular configuration, with the barrel head mounted in about 4-5" of staves and 2 hoops. Depending on the cooperage that gives from 1" to 2" of staves showing between the hoops. This provides the carving with a natural border and leaves no mistake its a real barrel. A wood backing is glued and screwed in a circular pocket milled out around the inside of the staves, and the hoops are screwed to the staves to ensure the entire piece remains a rock-solid unit. These really look great hung on a wall, or mounted on one of our taller tables.
Size: Approx. 24" dia. x approx 4" to 5" thick - click to close -

Flat Barrel Head $199 |

Click here for gallery What's this? The "Flat Barrel Head" is a "stand-alone" flat oak barrel head completely removed from the barrel staves. A wood backing is glued and screwed to the back side to ensure against splitting or warping. These look great hung on a wall or mounted on one of our beautiful tables.

For table or easel-mounted barrel carvings:
Our Table stands and Easels are sold as separate, non-customized products rather than as options in this design flow.
If you are going to use your barrel head carving as a table top, you will probably want to add a protective transparent top. Our recommended options include 24" to 30" round, 3/8" or 1/2" thick glass tops with polished edges. In commercial settings you may want to consider using tempered glass, though this can be quite expensive. This glass can be ordered from most local glass suppliers. We do supply small round rubber cushioned feet with all tenth barrel head tables for use between the barrel and glass to prevent sliding and scratching.
Note: At this time we do not supply glass tops. The best online deal and selection for round glass table tops we know of is here: http://www.glasstopsdirect.com/glass-round-28.php

If you selected a template, which includes an outer border (Template A1, B1, C1 or D1), select a border carving here. If you did not choose a template with a border (Templates A2, B2, C2 or D2) but you would like one of these borders, go back to Step 2 and select another template. Or select “none” at bottom for no border carving design.
Choose from two carving styles: "Dished" borders are carved into a smooth recess. "Sculpted" borders are carved into an irregular, chiseled recess (shown below).

How to Notes
Here you can upload your own artwork files to us (up to 3), such as company logos, in a variety of different file formats. Ideally these will be in a 2D vector graphics format (usually .eps or .ai format), or your own 3d relief model (e.g. .stl, .vrml). They can even be bitmap images (e.g. .gif, .jpeg, .png, .tif format) - though these need to be clean, high resolution graphics in order for us to be able to produce a high quality carving.
Artwork you upload may need to be transformed in some way in order to make it "carvable". If you have the skills and tools, or access to someone who does, you may want to consider using them to provide a carvable file to us. Otherwise we will be happy to perform this work for you. If considerable effort is required to do this (for example - to produce a 3D relief model from a photo image) we can provide a separate price quote to you.

Additional Carving Instructions:
If you selected a template with text, enter the text, style, font and sizes below.
The number of text characters that fit on a line is dependent on the template you selected, whether you specify "straight" or "circular arch" line wrap, and font type and size. If your combination of choices won't fit or looks too crowded when we generate the proof, we will suggest minor adjustments to the font size and/or the template layout.
Guidelines on your text design:
Length:
Strive to keep text string lengths to no more than 15 characters each (including spaces). We will use exactly the upper or lower case letters you input.
Line Wrap:
You can choose from text strings on a straight line, or wrap them part way around a circular arch.
Font:
If you must have a font that is not listed here, please specify Font "other", and provide the name in the "other info" box. We can carve any "true-type" font.
Size:
Most text should be in the range of 1 to 2 inches in height. Provide your preference or "best guess" and we'll recommend adjustments as necessary in the proof.

You selected a template without a text option. Please move on to Step 4.
Choose how you want your carving finished. Make all your selections below and then move on to the final review and submit page.
Here's our basic philosophy about finishing these beautiful carvings:
- We use only the highest quality materials (stains, sealers and top-coats)
- We recommend the use of transparent stains to enhance the natural beauty of the wood, over the use of solid body stains and paints
- We provide "unfinished" & "partially finished" options for customers who want to provide their own custom painting or finishing
"Fully Finished" barrel heads are stained, sealed, painted per your specification (if any), and final top-coated.
"Partially Finished" barrels are stained, sealed and re-sanded. They are ready for you to add your own paint, and apply final top-coat.
"Unfinished" barrel heads are fully prepped and finish-sanded, ready for you to apply your own finishes.

See our stain color samples.
We stain the entire barrel head and staves with the semi-transparent stain color of your choice. In most cases, we recommend stain colors which look most "natural" on oak (Golden Oak, Red Oak, Natural). (Applies to Partially-Finished & Fully-Finished options only.)

What's This?
We recommend that solid body paints be used very selectively - though we certainly understand the need to paint a logo true to the "corporate colors". Please provide any instructions in the text box on what you would like to have painted or glazed, and with what colors, and/or upload a full color image of your logo or artwork. Please remember that for complex or highly exacting painting needs, you can select the "unfinished" or "partially finished" options and have your own artist paint the barrel head after you've taken delivery.

Lacquer is the recommended top coat for indoor display and spar varnish for outdoor. (Applies to Fully-Finished option only.)

Your desired finish gloss is achieved by applying the appropriate gloss level of topcoat. (Applies to Fully-Finished option only.)

Once you are satisfied with your design, you have 2 options:
1.) you can add it to your shopping cart and buy it now, or
2.) you can submit your design to us for a free, no-obligation, photo-realistic design proof which we will send to you for approval via email. In this case we will email you an invoice for the product only when (and if) you fully approve the proof.
